Robert Albert Bloch is born 5 Apr 1917 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States. He is a son of Raphael Bloch and Stella Loeb. Bloch's family moves to Maywood, a Chicago suburb, when he is five; he lives there until he is ten. He attends the Methodist Church there, despite his parents' Jewish heritage, and attends Emerson Grammar School.
